To the family of a fifth grader:
We recognize the importance of families and schools working together to help our students achieve the outcomes expected at each grade level.  We think the following information will be useful to you in understanding and working with your child and his/her school.

By the end of fifth grade, your child is expected to:

  • Interpret what is read through recognition of main idea, details, inference, cause and effect, logical conclusion and fact and opinion.
  • Understand and apply grade level vocabulary.
  • Increase comprehension by using prior knowledge and prediction skills.
  • Develop personal interpretation to what is read.
  • Use general reference materials to locate information (dictionary, encyclopedia, maps, almanac, atlas, newspaper, thesaurus).
  • Use appropriate study skills (note-taking, outlining).
  • Read for pleasure daily.
  • Deliver oral presentations.
  • Follow oral directions.
  • Recognize the characteristics of descriptive text.
  • Recognize the similarities and differences between selections.
  • Discuss the implied motives of characters in the stories.
  • Compare information from different sources.
  • Discuss the author's purpose in a selection.
  • Understand and apply grade level vocabulary.
  • Increase comprehension by using prior knowledge and prediction skills.
  • Note-taking, outlining from a variety of sources of published material, graphic organizer to form an outline.
  • Originate and organize ideas during pre-writing activities.
  • Extend written and oral vocabulary.
  • Expand sentences using adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositional phrases.
  • Use a variety of sentence patterns.
  • Write compositions using topic sentences, supporting details and transitions between paragraphs.
  • Write sequentially and with unity, developing introductions and conclusions.
  • Write for a variety of purposes and audiences - journals/learning logs, letters, poetry, persuasive, personal narratives, imaginative compositions, research reports, and content area writing activities.
  • Participate in a variety of editing activities (self, peer, teacher-directed).
  • Edit for logic, clarity and mechanics.

What is a fifth grader like?

  • Needs structure, fairness, and consistency.
